Job hunting is never easy, but everyone agrees that the coronavirus pandemic has created challenges unlike any we’ve ever seen, with unemployment expected to hit 16% or higher and employers laying off or furloughing millions. With the expanded COVID-19 unemployment payments expected to end on July 31, many are facing the need to take advantage of workforce opportunities they may have overlooked until now. What are those opportunities?
Many states are actively reopening their economies in stages, which means many typical summer seasonal jobs coming back online, especially for students on break. Although these jobs may be part-time, they can offer additional advantages to the student such as an introduction to a career or area of interest that can grow over the long term. As we wrote in our blog article of 7/24/2019, some summer jobs may draw on skills you already possess; others may help you test out your ultimate career goals, especially jobs you work once you have a year or two of college under your belt. Strong summer job sectors include retail sales, interning, housekeeping/janitorial, electronics, and food production.
Speaking of food production, these environments require the same hygiene, health, and dress code practices as restaurants, hotels, and other hospitality businesses which have been hit particularly hard as people stay home to prevent risk of exposure. People must eat nonetheless, and in this case, food delivery, prepackaged meal kits, and other food-related convenience services are in higher demand than ever before. Consequently, employees who have been furloughed or laid off from food service jobs are especially good candidates for jobs currently open in food production facilities across the nation.
In many ways, the “new normal” in America is merely a shift toward finding viable alternatives to “the old normal”. If that shift means a job lost over here, it is likely to mean a job gained over there. All in all, it means “don’t give up; there are plenty of opportunities out there.” These opportunities exist not just for students, summer job seekers, and those with food service/production skills, but for job seekers in general who are entering or re-entering the workplace, retirees looking for extra income, and telecommuters seeking supplemental income.
